Educators' FAQ
Why this page
As we gear up for the first instance of Bebras Malta, we will update the questions and answers below to support educators with technical issues
Technical Questions and Answers
Receiving Trial Credentials
You should receive trial credentials a few days after submitting this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc1rjvbOOakLxxleYmWhaBBLFKOJivvRd_6IzPabiNLlKbbwQ/viewform. If you submitted the form and still don't have credentials after one week, please feel free to let us know. If you receive multiple sets of credentials, please use the batch in the most recent email.
Using Student Credentials
You should receive two emails per spreadsheet submitted: one for males and one for females. Each username and password in the list corresponds to a pseudonym in the spreadsheet. Each student may use their own credentials to start the challenge either by scanning the QR code or visiting https://ville.utu.fi.
Upon first login, a 40-minute countdown timer sets off. Once the 40 minutes elapse, there can be no further changes to the students' responses. If you need a fresh set of trial credentials, simply let us know or resubmit the form above.
What happens if a student is absent?
If a student is absent, the credentials can be used any other day as long as the educator keeps the challenge open (see next point on Educator Credentials).
What happens if a student account needs to be reset?
In case the student needs to restart the challenge, the educator can reset the student account (see next point on Educator Credentials).
Using Educator Credentials
You should also receive a username and password to access the platform as an educator. This is optional for you, but through your login you will have visibility of your student accounts. You will also be able to reset a student account if this is needed for some reason: just click "Manage students" and you change the status of a student account by clicking on it.
Go to https://ville.utu.fi/#!assessment
If you are doing the trial: enter MALTA2024BCTRIAL as activation code
If you are doing the actual challenge: enter BEBRASC2024MALTA as activation code
Enter the username (email address) and password you have been given.
After the Trial
After students complete the trial, you as the teacher can press "Close this challenge and publish scores" and then you can see all the student scores per question.
The Bebras Challenge 2024 - Receiving real challenge credentials (post-trial)
When it is time for the actual Bebras Challenge, you may request fresh credentials using this form. Note that we will use the same data you submitted through our earlier form. See above for the activation code needed to access the platform as a teacher using the same password as before.
The same process for managing student accounts and publishing scores during the trial applies for the actual challenge.
Generating certificates
To generate certificates for the Challenge, press the button "Download Diplomas" and you will get two PDFs, containing one certificate per page for all male and female participants respectively.
Since we only have pseudonyms, the generated certificates don't include the real student names. In case you would like to create certificates with real names, feel free to create a copy of our template and modify it accordingly.
Understanding scores
Tasks are classified as "Easy" "Medium" and "Hard" depending on the age category.
Questions are marked negatively if answered incorrectly as follows:
Easy: -2 (wrong), 0 (no answer), 6 (correct answer)
Medium: -3 (wrong), 0 (no answer), 9 (correct answer)
Hard: -4 (wrong), 0 (no answer), 12 (correct answer)
The number of questions depends on the age category as shown below and to avoid the final scores being negative, scoring starts from a number such that if all answers are wrong, the student gets a zero.
2023 (Trial was based on 2023 actual challenge questions)
Years 2/3: 3 Medium, 3 Hard (Starting score: 21, Maximum score: 84)
Years 4/5: 4 Easy, 3 Medium, 3 Hard (Starting score: 29, Maximum score: 116)
Years 6/7, Years 8/9, Years 10/11, Sixth Form: 5 Easy, 5 Medium, 5 Hard (Starting score: 45, Maximum score: 180)
2024 (Actual Challenge)
Years 2/3: 2 Easy, 4 Medium, 4 Hard (Starting score: 32, Maximum score: 128)
Years 4/5: 4 Easy, 4 Medium, 4 Hard (Starting score: 36, Maximum score: 144)
Years 6/7, Years 8/9, Years 10/11, Sixth Form: 5 Easy, 5 Medium, 5 Hard (Starting score: 45, Maximum score: 180)
